The Success of the P790 Players Iron

Make no mistake, under the new coating beats the heart of a true players iron that can deliver extreme distance. The P790 uses SpeedFoam technology inside the hollow cavity of the forged club head to deliver unrivaled feel and workability. The SpeedFoam not only improves the sound damping and feel on contact with the ball, it also redirects the energy of the shot by supporting the face to maximise power transfer and enhance distance.

The face of the P790 Black is just 1.7mm thick and backed by a re-engineered Inverted Cone. This Cone technology allows the face to be thinner at the edges increasing the flexibility of the lower portion. Improving ball interaction at this critical point low point improves overall speed across the whole face.

Taylormade P790 Irons Review

The Taylor Made marketeers’ line of ‘this beauty is a beast’ sums these irons up pretty perfectly and anybody who has seen Dustin Johnson rip apart long par 4s with the 2 iron off the tee will be familiar with the clubs. Many of the golfers we’ve fit for these clubs have been shocked by not only how far they go but also the great feel throughout the set which is more than likely down to the fact that these irons feature TaylorMade’s brand new SpeedFoam technology. This new feature combined with the forged steel face ultimately serves to maximise distance whilst retaining a softer sound and feel. The head design is also incredibly pleasing on the eye which appeals to the more discerning golfer so it is fair to say that Taylor Made really have created a truly long and forgiving ‘players’ iron.

One word of caution, however, is that because these irons are so long, some players and the pro’s at JamGolf included, have noted that the short irons can go too far and leave quite significant distance gaps at the shorter irons. Therefore, we recommend that you should definitely consider including the P790 A wedge in your set or maybe even look at creating your own ‘combo’ set by including p770 irons at 7-PW.

The P790 is not only an incredibly long and forgiving iron, but they look and feel great. They are available for custom fit with a number of shafts and grips available without upcharge.
