Those familiar with recent Callaway driver ranges will have been aware of the Sub Zero model that has made the line up in previous years. Low launching, low spinning, these have been well-used by golfers with fast ball speeds to win tournaments at all elite levels. Callaway has moved away from this name and into ‘LS’, probably because whilst they still want to highlight the low spin aspect of the club, an incredibly playable ‘players’ club’ has been created.
The first thing to note is the appearance of the club. It looks great from the top, and more traditional players are going to be pleased that it’s hard to even notice the added carbon to the top of the clubhead. This increased use of carbon has allowed Callaway to save 13 grams of weight, which has been moved to allow a higher MOI whilst keeping a low centre of gravity, i.e. making it longer and more forgiving which is particularly important for longer hitters whose bad shots can be way off line. What is a welcome re addition to the lower spinning Callaway driver is the head adjustability, which not only helps correct ball flight (Callaway claims this can be up to 16 yards) but can also help players move the weight behind the part of the club face they hit the ball out of most regularly, thus increasing ball speeds without needed to change their swing.
No doubt this is going to be a long, forgiving driver for those with faster head speeds and the tech is no doubt going to be a fairway finder. A point to consider is that this head, from early testing, is likely to produce more spin than previous Sub Zero models which on the one hand will be great for finding fairways but might ‘spin up’ for those with much faster swing speeds. There is also the likelihood that those with slightly slower swing speeds might opt for a driver that offers great performance, a neutral head bias and adjustability. Therefore, we recommend talking with a JamGolf PGA professional to talk through your shaft, loft and flex options.
